Abstract: With the problems encountered in protecting the seepage failure of ABUKUMA river in Japan, we discussed the mechanism and the influencing factors of seepage failure in the foundation of river embankments using the saturated unsaturated flow FEM analyses. In this paper, we discussed superiority and inferiority of the protecting methods as well as the applicable conditions for them. Furthermore, also discussed some key points in the protecting project.
