Abstract:
The main reasons resulting in the poor seismic performance of the open type wharf with standing piles are clarified by examining extensive documented case studies of the damaged pile-supported wharves. The state of the art of the researches on the open type wharf with standing piles, from the aspects of the seismic design methods, soil-pile interaction, seismic performance of the batter piles and pile-deck connections, is presented, and the applications of the research outcomes in the seismic codes for the pile-supported wharves are summarized, and the deficiencies about the studies and the problems needed to be further studied are pointed out in this paper. Some suggestions to revise the domestic seismic design standards and codes are also made. This is the second part of the series papers, which mainly introduces the estimation methods in calculating the pile-soil interaction for the pile-supported wharves and the methods and research results of dynamic analysis for the open type wharf with standing piles. The research results show that the estimation methods for the pile-soil interaction are good enough, however, more and more attention to the studies of the collapse resistance performance and response properties under the near-fault ground motions for the open type wharf with standing piles should be paid in the future.
